SCREAM BOOTH

I recently became the steward of a vintage booth and have been developing plans to transform it into a participatory sound sculpture and installation that expands upon my previous work, the collective scream, which I started back in 2020. This new project extends my research of collective grief using the framework of relational aesthetics, social sculpture, and Hydrocene theory.

Conceptually, privacy and safety are essential to the experience inside the project’s repurposed phone booth. The screams will not be recorded but electronically modulated, converting them into the soothing sounds of water- waves crashing on the shore, waterfalls, or ripples in a lake, for example. Sounds of water will fill the booth from floor to ceiling through wall-mounted speakers. As a result, participants will immerse themselves in an ambient soundtrack that transforms public grief as cathartic, allowing sadness to flow back into the rhythm of existence. When the participant opens the booth door, the regenerative sound of water will spill into the surrounding space through a speaker at the top, creating a communal experience of one person's passage through a momentary rupture.

As we get deeper into 2025, the reasons to SCREAM just keep piling up.

So why not let it out?
